Streamline’s Advisory Board is pleased to announce Jonathan Follows as the second member of its Advisory Board.
“Having someone of Jonathan’s calibre on Streamline Computing’s Advisory Board is fantastic for the company” said Dr Richard Groves, Chief Operating Officer at Streamline Computing. “His depth of knowledge and vision will be invaluable in ensuring that Streamline continues to meet the expectations of its customers with respect to technology trends and cycles”.
Jonathan leads the Distributed Computing (DisCo) group in the Computational Science and Engineering department at STFC Daresbury Laboratory. The group’s remit is to assess, investigate, evaluate and report on developments in HPC hardware and software which are of interest and importance to UK HPC users. As well as making the technology it purchases available for experimentation and investigation by UK academia, the Laboratory also runs the annual Daresbury Machine Evaluation Workshop in December each year as a forum in which HPC software and hardware vendors can interact with UK academics. The Distributed Computing group is an active member of the HPC-SIG organisation, established as a mutual support group for UK university HPC provision with a specific focus on making academic HPC sustainable.
A major focus area for the DisCo group is the Hartree Centre, to be established at Daresbury Laboratory as a focus for computational science in the UK. The centre will enable science to be performed through advanced computer simulation, especially looking to the future ³exascale² systems which are being designed now, and working on the challenges of scaling HPC applications to run on the radically different computer architectures which these new systems will require.
Prior to joining Daresbury Laboratory in April 2008, Jonathan worked at IBM for over 20 years. Jonathan was responsible for the design and implementation of the UK¹s national supercomputer, HPCx, which was located at Daresbury Laboratory and ran in service from December 2002 to January 2010.
During 2010 Jonathan has served on review panels at the request of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the USA, providing input to the selection of HPC vendors and service providers for the US TeraGrid service.
